Grant Funding Brings What If Initiative to Inspire Community Problem-Solving
MASSILLON, OH [February 5, 2026]— Perry Local Schools is proud to announce that Edison Middle School has been awarded a $10,000 grant from Stark Community Foundation to support the What If initiative, an innovative program designed to empower middle school students through creative problem-solving and community engagement.
The What If initiative is a 12-week course developed by TomTod Ideas, a Canton-based nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for middle school students. The program encourages creative thinking, builds confidence, and helps students turn ideas into action by addressing real-world challenges within their community.
Through What If, students explore the guiding question, “What if...?”, as they identify a local problem, research solutions, develop and pitch ideas, and work with community partners to bring their concepts to life. The program follows a six-stage project management process—Ponder, Explore, Define, Ideate, Create, and Pilot—allowing students to take on different roles that align with their individual strengths and interests.
Selected Edison Middle School students were hand-picked to participate in the program this semester, which emphasizes teamwork, leadership, empathy, and innovation. Perry Local Schools also plans to explore future connections between What If and Career Technical Education programs to further expand learning opportunities.
“We are incredibly grateful to Stark Community Foundation for their generous support of this program,” said Superintendent Nate Stutz. “This grant allows us to invest directly in our students and provide meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom. We are proud to actively pursue grants and external funding opportunities that enhance educational programming and create new pathways for student success. ”
Since its founding in 1963, Stark Community Foundation has partnered with individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits to strengthen the community through philanthropy. The Foundation is committed to fostering a thriving, engaged, and inclusive Stark County by responsibly stewarding charitable resources and supporting impactful programs.
Perry Local Schools extends its sincere appreciation to Stark Community Foundation for investing in students and helping bring innovative educational experiences like What If to Edison Middle School.
